Most of us tend to look at the future and think how it will be better when … when we lose weight, when we get rich, when we have a family, when our kids grow up and we have time for ourselves again.. But where is the joy of NOW? Right this minute?
Why can’t we find the joy in who we are right now? Flawed, living with problems, but still experiencing the joy of being alive and the very adventure of improving who we are every day.
The Joy of NOW
Despite, and maybe because, we are trying to make changes in our lives, to be better and healthier, we need to remember the joy of being alive and live in the NOW.
Life is uncertain and we should define our success, not by the target but, by the journey. We should find the joy in every step we take and especially be kind to ourselves, loving ourselves and the people and events in our lives that are meaningful.
When someone is working on losing weight, they are often critical of themselves, measuring their worth by the number on the scale. Instead, we should be joyful that we are moving towards health, every day. There will always be setback. Days when you eat more than you should, when you just can’t make yourself go to the gym, days when you see the weight creeping back up. These things happen to everyone and it helps to think of them as just obstacles in your journey, not a complete roadblock
Dieting and deprivation can make you cranky, so look at the health that you are infusing in your body by everything you are eating and by the exercise you are doing.
Celebrate how awesome you are for doing it!
When the scale doesn’t show you the number you were hoping for, run your hands over your body and marvel at the bones starting to peek through, look at the brightness of your eyes in the mirror, marvel at how much better you sleep at night.
When your husband joins you for a walk after dinner and takes your hand, let yourself experience the blessings that life has given you and walk proudly.
Keep a Joy journal and fill it each day with the smallest moments in which you felt joy, a compliment someone paid you, glimpsing the impossibly incandescent color of a rose petal where the sun shone through it, your child’s smile when you told him you loved him.
Life is full of joy.
Don’t cheat yourself of any of it.
Don’t wait to reach your destination to feel worthy of a joyful life.
Revel in how wonderful you are right this very minute!
